July 2023
This Month is a monthly email newsletter where I share three happenings in and around Detroit. Get involved.
Wednesdays through September 6
The Black Bottom Live Music Series
@ Campbell Terrace, Detroit
Free
D.Cipher, a collective / nonprofit focused on advancing the careers of local musicians, is back for their 6th year of curating of stellar live performances on the Dequindre Cut. This year’s theme, PROLIFIC BLACKNESS, honors the legacy of the Black Bottom Neighborhood. Nearby, you can learn more about the neighborhood’s history on this self-guided walking tour.
July 14 through July 16
40th Annual African World Festival
@ Hart Plaza, Detroit
A day pass is $15
Yes, it’s always been free and outside the Wright Museum. Yes, change is hard. And yes, Parliament Funkadelic featuring George Clinton is playing the opening night. Free your mind…and your ass will follow.
July 19 through July 23
Concert of Colors
@ Cultural Center, Detroit
Free
This year’s line-up is giving blues, reggae, gospel, Greek folk dancing, Nigerian Afrobeat, Native American dancing, local experimental jazz musicians, the National Arab Orchestra, circus performers, and 70s-inspired Cambodian rock. Go and hopefully you’ll catch something as amazing as when I saw Buffy Sainte-Marie a few years back.
