@ Cultural Center, Detroit
Free
Noel Night is the most Lifetime Christmas movie you can feel in Detroit (other than watching people consecutively propose downtown at the ice rink). Starring in this year’s holiday bonanza: Under the Snow, a new puppet performance by Carrie Morris with music by Shara Nova, so many cool vocal and choral groups, something called “Flute Cocktail”, and Thornetta Davis, the queen of the blues and the star atop the tree.
Starting Monday, December 4, in theaters everywhere December 8
“The Boy and the Heron”
@ Your movie theater of choice, Whereversville
Between $8-12
Purportedly the last film by Hayao Miyazaki even though he’s come out of retirement a few times already. If you don’t know him, Miyazaki is the beloved Japanese director, animator, and wizard behind the curtain of a lifetime of imaginative, meaningful, fantastical movies. Sounds like this one will be a treat, so give the trailer a peek.
Now through March 31, 2024
Ruth E. Carter: Afrofuturism in Costume Design
@ The Wright, Detroit
General admission $30, free admission on December 10 for Second Sundays
Get a glimpse of work created by legendary costume designer Ruth E. Carter, who got her start with Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” and dreamed up Wakanda style for “Black Panther”. If you want to get really hype for this exhibit, watch her episode of Abstract: The Art of Design on Netflix before going.
